What is Numenera?
Numenera is a tabletop roleplaying game set in a far-future science-fantasy world created by Monte Cook. It was first published in 2013 by Monte Cook Games. The setting of Numenera is known as the Ninth World, a distant future Earth where civilizations have risen and fallen numerous times, leaving behind vast remnants of advanced technology and artifacts known as “numenera.”
In Numenera, players take on the roles of explorers, adventurers, and seekers of knowledge in this strange and mysterious world. They encounter bizarre creatures, ancient ruins, and enigmatic phenomena as they journey across the landscape, unraveling the mysteries of the past and shaping the future.
The game system of Numenera is designed to be flexible and narrative-driven, with a focus on storytelling and exploration. It uses a unique ruleset that emphasizes simplicity and improvisation, allowing players to quickly resolve actions and focus on the narrative aspects of the game.
Character creation in Numenera is streamlined, with players choosing from three core character types: Glaives (warriors), Nanos (wielders of mystical energies), and Jacks (versatile adventurers). Players also select descriptors and foci that further define their characters’ abilities and backgrounds.
One of the key features of Numenera is its emphasis on discovery and exploration. The Ninth World is filled with strange and wondrous places, from ancient ruins and forgotten cities to bizarre landscapes and otherworldly realms. Players are encouraged to explore these environments, uncovering secrets, solving mysteries, and confronting the dangers that lurk within.
Overall, Numenera offers players a rich and imaginative world to explore, filled with intriguing mysteries, epic adventures, and limitless possibilities. It has received critical acclaim for its unique setting, innovative mechanics, and evocative storytelling, making it a popular choice among fans of tabletop roleplaying games.
The rules has a vague Dungeons & Dragons vibe due to Monte Cook’s earlier employment at TSR and Wizards of the Coast. Learn more about Numenera.
